LITTLE MISS PERFECT - THE CURSE OF THE GOOD GIRL

It's one of articles in TeenVOGUE October issue. I found it about a week ago, but now I decided to repost it in my blog.

Eighteen-year-old Becca* seems to have it all: Gorgeous looks, athletic skills, smarts, more friends than she can handle, a sassy sense of humor, and--to top it off--a genuinely nice personality. Last year, though, when she started getting Bs on her English papers, Becca panicked. "If something in my life isn't perfect, I freak out," she explains, "I try to pretend that everything doesn't have to be exactly the way I want it, but if it can't be perfect, I won't give it any effort." Intimidated and anxious, she stopped trying in class. "I would turn in bad work just because I was afraid of failing."

Like a lot of girls today, Becca has a persistent belief that she has to be perfect 24-7. When she isn't, ruthless self-criticism kicks in. It's the curse of the good girl, the pressure many teens feel to hold themselves up to standards that are impossible to reach: to be friends with everyone, nice all the time, flawless at schoolwork, completely selfless, all while looking polished and pretty.

But how good is it to be "good"? A good girl may have tons of friends, but can also be a people pleaser, doing what others want to keep the peace in her friendships. She doesn't get angry, but she holds back what she really thinks. She has to do everything effortlessly right, so when she (inevitably) makes a mistake, she reacts poorly. "Teens today feel that they have to 'do more, better and faster,'" notes Courtney E. Martin, a blogger at feministing.com and author of Perfect Girls, Starving Daughters: How The Quest for Perfection is Harming Young Women (Berkley Trade). "They end up believing that worth is measured by appearance and achievement, rather than the deeper stuff of relationships, joy, and fulfillment." As a result, Martin says, teens push themselves too hard: "They sacrifice precious time and energy on the altar of so-called success, rather than seek the slow, hard-earned rewards of happiness and genuine health."

Not all girls feel the push to be good all the time--some only feel it in their social lives, where perfection is paramount, or at school or work, where they'll do anything to avoid conflict. For Julia, fifteen, constantly being nice to fellow students was overwhelming. She notes, "You have to be extremely sweet to everyone, no matter how you actually feel about them. Or else you're a bad girl. You're mean." Classmates police behavior, punishing violators with gossip and dirty looks. And due to the ubiquity of cell phones, it can seem like everyone's watching--bad behavior can easily be captured and texted to friends with a click of a button. As Melissa, seventeen, puts it, "If you're not nice, a chain reaction can occur. If one person, like the Queen Bee, doesn't like you, no one else will either." Determined to protect their image and put up a happy front, girls--like Julia and Melissa--don't develop the skills to tell people how they are really feeling, and emotions like anger, betrayal, or hurt can fester internally, causing self-destructive behavior.

When Becca's parents got divorced when she was sixteen, she was furious at her mother but afraid to show it. Instead, she stopped eating. Starving herself, recalls Becca, gave her a way to manage her anger without letting it out: "I tried to express myself by not eating. That was easier for me than confronting my mother." Roni Cohen-Sandler, Ph.D., a psychologist and author of Stressed-Out Girls: Helping Them Thrive in the Age of Pressure (Penguin) has observed this troubling mind-body connection in many teens in her practice. "Some girls develop eating disorders, cut themselves, or become depressed when they think their family will reject or punish them if they have feelings of sadness or anger," she says. "They feel like it's bad of them to have these feelings--and that they're the problem in the family when they do." When girls don't develop the ability to regulate their feelings, their bodies often pay the price.

But, in addition to physical repercussions, holding back your true feelings can make even the closest relationships feel false and insecure. Melissa says, "You just don't say anything at all if it's not nice. I try not to say anything I'll regret and to think before I speak. I'm always aware of other people's feelings." Phrases like "just kidding" and "no offense" allow people to say something cruel (or simply honest) while maintaining a positive image. "If you start sentences with 'no offense, but...,' you can say whatever you want," Iris*, sixteen, says. "You can be totally mean and hurtful." As a result, many teens are never quite sure who they can trust or if someone is really joking. And like an unused muscle weakening over time, girls become less and less skilled at speaking their truth in relationships.

With the daunting combination of academic, social, and parental pressure, drinking becomes a dangerous outlet for many good girls. Like "just kidding" and "no offense," the phrase "I was so wasted" is often used to excuse less-than-perfect behavior. "There are girls who are like, 'Oh my God, I was so drunk last night, I hooked up with this guy and I didn't want to.' Everybody's like, 'Oh it didn't count, you were drinking,'" says Alexa, seventeen. Notes Becca, "If there's alcohol, then you don't have to worry about your actions being wrong or bad. You don't have regrets. You don't have to be perfect."

At eighteen, Sarah* is a recovering good girl. She spent most of middle and high school determined to be the best. "I was friendly to everybody. There wasn't a single person in the hallway that I didn't smile at," she remembers. "I always had to be on top." However, when her achievements didn't meet her standards, Sarah began cutting. "It was a way to release my anger," she explains. After nearly three years of self-harm, she decided she'd had enough. "I realized that I was like a mouse running in a wheel, always trying to get somewhere. I couldn't get anywhere even though I was working really hard. It was self-destructive." Sarah set out to achieve a new kind of goal: happiness. "I decided to try my hardest, do my best, and love what I'm doing and where I am." In breaking the curse of the good girl, Sarah became a real girl, someone who doesn't try to be something she's not, who stays connected to herself, listening to what she genuinely thinks, feels, and wants. Sarah says: "I accept that I may not get higher than a C in math, no matter how hard I try. And I may make people angry sometimes. But I've had the greatest year!"

My reply :

This is very me. I'm the girl who always get the BEST marks in school. Teachers and friends always compliment me about that. So, when I get a mark below my friend, it's like I'm failed. I would cry alone then. I hate my friend of being taken my grades. But now, after I spendin time alone and talk more to God, I feel comfort. I don't mind about marks that don't match my hope. Life is easier when you don't take it seriously. Good luck for you who's been struggling about this like me.

Justin Bieber - Produced by Usher!

You guys rock!!!

When he was hardly old enough to drive, an aspiring artist named Usher broke into the mainstream, and now the multi-platinum R&B performer is taking another budding teenage musician under his wing. Usher connected Justin Bieber, a 15-year-old from Ontario, Canada, with industry insiders in Los Angeles Monday, Billboard.com reports.

Like Usher, Bieber sings with Rhythm & Blues in his voice-a voice he started using musically just three years ago. The teen is recording his first album My World with Island Records, and he has already put out a single entitled “One Time” with producer Chris “Tricky” Stewart.

YouTube videos allowed Bieber’s manager, former So So Def marketing executive Scooter Braun, to discover the young talent. Bieber met Usher by chance, and their relationship ultimately led to a contract offer by Island Def Jam chairman Antonio “L.A.” Reid in October.

To hear the 15-year-old singing sensation, check out Bieber’s single “One Time” at www.myspace.com/justinbieber.

Peanut Butter Pancakes

Conventional chunky peanut butter works best in this recipe; the natural-style peanut butter (ground peanuts and oil) is difficult to stir into a liquid batter. Serve these with the Strawberry-Lemon Syrup, the Raspberry-Honey Coulis, or any kind of jam.

Yield
5 servings (serving size: 2 pancakes)

Ingredients
1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
6 tablespoons sugar
2 teaspoons baking powder
1/4 teaspoon salt
1 1/4 cups fat-free milk
1/4 cup chunky peanut butter
1 tablespoon roasted peanut oil or vegetable oil
1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
2 large eggs, lightly beaten
Preparation
Lightly spoon flour into dry measuring cups; level with a knife. Combine flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt in a large bowl. Combine milk and remaining ingredients; add to flour mixture, stirring until smooth.

Spoon about 1/4 cup batter onto a hot nonstick griddle or a large nonstick skillet. Turn pancakes when tops are covered with bubbles and edges look cooked.

Michael Jackson On-liners

THE KING IS DEAD

Michael Jackson died while trying to play the guitar. Apparently he had a heart attack after his G string snapped while trying to finger A minor.

Since Michael Jackson was 99% plastic, he will be melted down and moulded into Lego so that children can play with him for a change...

McDonalds has announced "the McJackson". It's a 50 year old piece of meat between 6 year old buns.

I'm going to see a new group next month – the Jackson 4.

Michael Jackson had so much plastic surgery they are moving his corpse straight into Madame Tussauds – no need for a waxwork.

After the autopsy they stitched Michael Jackson up with a glue gun.

Jacko died of a heart attack this morning shocked when he discovered that Boyz II Men was a band, not a delivery service.

Bad timing with the Jacko death - he was due on a family vacation in Florida next week... he was going to Tampa with the kids.

It seems Michael Jackson didn't die of a heart attack at home. He was in the children's ward, having a stroke.

Due to Michael Jackson's unexpected demise, all of his dates in London have had to be cancelled. Starting with James, aged 10, Peter aged 9...

Michael Jackson's three kids are being taken over by the NSPCC. However, Madonna has already said she would take Bubbles to add to their growing collection of monkeys!

MJ is not going to be buried or cremated but recycled into plastic shopping bags so that he can remain white, plastic and dangerous for kids to play with.

MJ has just been refused entry into Heaven...
Don't blame it on the sunshine,
Don't blame it on the moonlight,
Don't blame it on the good times,
Blame it on the buggery.

An autopsy has revealed that Jacko's death was drug related. Medical experts are warning of the dangers of using 7 to 10 year old crack!

Confirmation has been received that Michael Jackson died today. Sources close to the Jackson family say the cause of death was a heart attack brought on by food poisoning. Apparently he ate some 12 year old nuts.

The world mourns the loss today of two great white women, Farrah and Michael.

Michael Jackson wanted to be cremated, and his ashes to be placed in a box of rice bubbles - just so he could experience coming out of a kids arse again.

They are going to bury Michael in South Australia - they get a 5 cent refund for recyclable plastics.

He didn't die of a heart attack. He drowned in the Hudson River. His body was found bobbing under a buoy.

Farrah Fawcett went into a coma. God appeared and said to her "Farrah, you have given so much pleasure to so many people, what would you like as your final wish?" Farrah said "I would like all the children around the world to be happy and safe". So God killed Michael Jackson.

Police have ruled out foul play in the death of Jacko, he simply tripped over a pram in his flat. Police are blaming it on the buggy.

Jacko's ghost has been sighted in a children's hospital, looks like he will continue to try to put the willies up small children.

Michael Jackson is dead. Hospital staff don't know what to do with the body as plastic recycle night is not until next Tuesday.

In a recent interview, Michael Jackson said he wants to have 10 children. He also said he wants to be a father again.

My Role Model - Coco Rocha

Hey! today I would like to publish post about Coco Rocha. She's a great model and totally stand out. I love her in every way (include her style)!

This is Coco's Vogue Espana cover :)

US Vogue May 2007
Coco Rocha is the second from right and Lily Donaldson is the first on the left (I love Lily too!)

Coco's and her lovely pet.

Early life

Rocha was born in Toronto, Ontario, but moved to Richmond, British Columbia at a very young age. Her family is in the flying industry. Her mother, Juanita Rocha, is a flight attendant and her father is a ticket manager. She has one sister and one brother named Lynsey and David Morandin. She is of Irish, Russian, and Welsh descent.

Rocha was discovered at the age of 14 when competing in an Irish dance competition,[citation needed] she went to Dixon Elementary School where she was enrolled in the French immersion program then transferring to Tomekichi Homma Elementary School. Later, she went to continue her education in Hugh McRoberts Secondary School. In 2002, agent Charles Stuart approached her and asked her if she would consider modeling for him. At that point, she had never thought of modeling before. When she did begin to model, her knowledge of fashion was limited.[2] She eventually gained insight into the fashion world after her best friends crammed in fashion study sessions in between studying for exams.[2]

Rocha is one of the few models who has spoken out against the prevalence of eating disorders in the modeling industry. She has acknowledged the pressure she faced as a fledgling model and recalls becoming obsessed with food after a trip to Singapore where she gained ten pounds.[3] In an email to the Associated Press, she gives an insight into the fashion world, saying: "I'll never forget the piece of advice I got from people in the industry when they saw my new body ... They said, 'You need to lose more weight. The look this year is anorexia. We don't want you to be anorexic but that's what we want you to look like."

[edit] Career

Rocha started her professional career in 2004, signing with SUPREME in New York City. Two years later, Rocha met fashion photographer Steven Meisel in February 2006. Soon, she was featured in an editorial with Gemma Ward and Amanda Moore. The editorial kickstarted her career, landing her the cover of the February 2006 issue of Vogue Italia. The week after, she walked the Spring/Summer 2006 New York City runways for a handful of designers, most notably Anna Sui and Marc Jacobs. Backstage at the Anna Sui show, Rocha met model Naomi Campbell, who held her hands and told her she was "her new favorite model".[4] After the New York Fashion Week, she soon followed by taking part in the Paris Fashion Week as well. She walked for esteemed designers like Stella McCartney, Christian Lacroix, and Emanuel Ungaro, and was chosen by Marc Jacobs to open and close his Louis Vuitton show.

During Jean Paul Gaultier's Scottish Highlands-inspired Fall/Winter 2007 show in February 2007, Rocha opened the show by Irish-dancing down the runway; American Vogue dubbed this the "Coco Moment" and suggested it as a sign that the fashion industry misses the "supermodels".

In the May 2007 issue of Vogue (US), she was featured on the cover with fellow models Doutzen Kroes, Caroline Trentini, Raquel Zimmermann, Sasha Pivovarova, Agyness Deyn, Jessica Stam, Hilary Rhoda, Chanel Iman, and Lily Donaldson as the new crop of supermodels.

Rocha has been on the covers of many top fashion magazines including Vogue, Flare, Fashion, Numéro, French, W, Harper's Bazaar, Dazed & Confused, i-D, Time Style & Design, among others.

Since her debut, Rocha has been the face of a variety of advertising campaigns including Americana Manhasset, Balenciaga, Chanel, D&G, Dior, Dolce & Gabbana, Lanvin, The Gap, Tommy Hilfiger, Yves Saint Laurent.

She is placed fourth on the Top 50 Models, Women list by models.com behind Lily Donaldson, Lara Stone, Sasha Pivovarova, Natasha Poly, and Raquel Zimmermann.

GET SHORTY - NYLON MAGAZINE

GET SHORTY - NYLON MAGAZINE: "GET SHORTY
The crop top makes a comeback - are you ready to bare all?

It used to be hemlines that moved around; with every passing decade, skirts slowly inched up, first passing ankles, then knees, before finally grazing thighs. But by now, wearing a miniskirt is practically pedestrian, embraced by everyone from tweens at the mall to octogenarians at bingo night.

Instead, it’s a very different type of skin-baring outfit that draws stares: the crop top. A closet mainstay in the ‘90s, the ab-revealing top works for bad girls (think Alicia Silverstone in the video for Aerosmith’s “Crazy”) and good girls (think Alicia Silverstone as Cher in Clueless) alike. Now, with temperatures on the rise, the crop is on the verge of a major comeback.

Designers from Anna Sui to Cushnie et Ochs showcased their own versions of the belly shirt on the spring '09 runway, but we found a few more that make up for the lack of material with reasonable prices (and for your own at-home DIY, try chopping up your favorite oversize tees). There are even crop tops with detachable tanks underneath for those too modest to show a bit of skin all day.
